The year 2024 will be relatively quiet for DC superhero films, with only three releases planned. Two of them will be animated films, while the third will be released in theaters.
Joker: Folie à Deux
The most anticipated of the DC films of 2024 is the sequel to the successful 2019 film, Joker. The original film was directed by Todd Phillips and starred Joaquin Phoenix in the lead role. The sequel, also directed by Phillips, will see Phoenix reprise his role alongside Lady Gaga, who will portray Harley Quinn.
The film is described as a musical, or at least partially so. Arkham Asylum is expected to be an important setting in the sequel, and there are rumors that the film will also be from Harley Quinn's point of view.
DC Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths
The second DC release of 2024 will be a trilogy of animated films, Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths. The films will adapt the story of the comic book of the same name, which was published in 1985.
In the original story, the Anti-Monitor, an evil being, threatens to destroy all universes in the multiverse. The Justice League must recruit heroes from different dimensions to stop him.
The animated films are expected to be released in three parts over the course of 2024.
Batman Azteca: Clash of Empires
The third and final DC film of 2024 is an original animated film titled Batman Azteca: Clash of Empires. The film is set in 16th-century Mexico and follows the adventures of a young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl.
Yohualli Coatl seeks to avenge his father's murder by the Spanish conquistadors. He trains with the bat god Tzinacan to confront the Spanish invasion and protect the temple of King Moctezuma.
The year 2024 will be an interesting one for DC fans, with films exploring different aspects of the DC canon. Joker: Madness for Two is a highly anticipated follow-up to a critically acclaimed film, while Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths is an epic conclusion to the Tomorrowverse universe. Batman Azteca: Clash of Empires is an original animated film that could explore new paths for the DC mythos.
